Making sense of the world...

Cara Goldthorpe

The other day, I was asked about my writing. ‘What do you write about?’… ‘What is your style?’… ‘Where do you get your ideas from?’

I could waste a lot of time answering these questions; giving a vague explanation of something I am not so good at defining. I write about a lot of things; I’m inspired by reality, by the human condition, and the beautiful world in which we live. But to be honest, I don’t know where my writing comes from. Sometimes it is inspired by an image, and then words rush out of me beyond my control.

When I write, I don’t think. It just comes. Then I look back on what I’ve created, and somehow there is meaning there. Maybe only I can see it, but either way, it doesn’t matter. I write for myself. It is nice when others appreciate what I create, but ultimately my writing is for me. I suppose it assists me to come to terms with our world, and make some sense of this wild universe.

It’s easier to show you what I mean…

The following photo that inspired my writing is by Andrew Kumler. More of his work can be found at: http://www.facebook.com/AndrewKumlerPhotography

Gentle rays of a fading sun, gracing the earth with a fragile kiss, before the descent of night. And in this haunting light, a fierce river beats with aching tenderness against burnt rocks. Sea spray, rise to greet me in a shower of ethereal mist. Like a phantom's touch, soothe mortal wounds and banish pain with the cooling glory of joyous tears.

Lazarus, Man, BHB's First Audiobook Release

Breakwater Harbor Books is excited to announce the release of its first audiobook, Lazarus, Man, by Scott J. Toney!

This is the story of Lazarus of Bethany, told through tale and tribulation.

Darkness. Nothing. There was a void in the world around him, without light or sound. A heaviness weighed on Lazarus' soul as he grasped for being. He sensed in the darkness there had been light only moments before but he could not grasp what that light was. Suddenly he felt a pulse in his chest. Something heavy held  his body firm. Memories flooded through his mind of heat, cattle...family. The  world was somehow wrong.

He tried to move but found he could not, could not raise the heaviness above him. He smelt Earth. Then, with a thrust, he pushed his bound arms out of the cave soil he was buried in and braced them on the Earth, using his weakened strength to pull upward. Earth caved in about him as he rose from his grave, his  arms and legs bound with bandages. There was a cloth over his face he could not  remove. He saw a faint light before him through the cloth.

"Lazarus, come out," a voice beckoned. He walked slowly in his bandages toward the light and could feel a warm breeze move about him. The sun radiated in the cloth over his eyes. "Unbind him, and let him go," the voice returned. He  felt coarse hands on his arms as bandages were unwrapped from him. Coolness came  over his skin where they had been. Lazarus breathed heavily, unsure of what was  happening.

He had a vague memory of being sick before this. He was barely aware of who he was. The cloth over his face was pulled away and he squinted as sunlight blinded him. A bearded man with long, wavy hair stood in the light. Jesus, he thought in disbelief as the man approached, placing his palm on Lazarus' forehead. "You are healed, brother," Jesus told him as Lazarus' sisters rushed to his side. "You are still needed in this world."

What others are saying about Lazarus, Man

"Scott adds a context around the existing scriptures that helped me to think about what it would be like to be Lazarus... the danger, the fear, the uncertainty about being given a second chance." - Julie Van Meter, author of A Beautiful Gift

"This book takes us through the events after Lazarus' rising from the grave and his feelings of being lost, disoriented perhaps. This brings a very human aspect to the miracle." - CMTStibbe, author of Chasing Pharaohs

Breakwater Harbor Books is honored to welcome 3 talented Up and Coming authors into our fold.  Their debut novels will release soon and BHB is energized to have them onboard!

Ivan Amberlake, Urban Fantasy, Author of The Beholder

Picture
Ivan Amberlake is an urban fantasy writer whose debut novel "The Beholder" was selected for review by HarperCollins on December 1, 2011. He is currently working on Book 2 of The Beholder series called "Path of the Heretic" and a YA Horror/Fantasy called "Diary of the Gone". Ivan has a Masters Degree in Linguistics and works as a teacher. His greatest passion is writing.

Melissa Simonson, Horror/Thriller, Author of Doubles

Picture
Melissa Simonson has been writing on and off since she was in highschool, but didn’t start taking it seriously until about four years ago. She’s a caffeine addict, a terrible driver, and has weird fascinations with rosary beads, complicated cocktails, and basically anything considered dark or creepy.

Since she saw him in her favorite movie Snatch, Melissa has wanted to marry Jason Statham.

When she’s not writing, she can be found watching endless hours of Dexter or rolling her eyes at her mother.

CMT Stibbe, Historical Fiction, Author of Chasing Pharaohs

Picture
CMT Stibbe is the daughter and sister of two published authors. She writes books that explore flawed characters and is best known for her lyrical prose and detailed research. With her love of world travel from the UK to the Middle East, the Holy Land and the Far East, Claire makes her home in New Mexico, USA with her husband and son. Her first novel, Chasing Pharaohs, is a book of ancient Egypt and tells a loose tale of Pharaoh Thutmose II, which is a safe bet since no one knows a thing about him. Chasing Pharaohs was selected for review by Harper Collins in December 2011. Claire’s second book, The Snare of the Fowler, also set in the 18th Dynasty, is still in the editing and writing process. It was selected as Wednesday’s One to Watch by Harper Collins in December 2012.

Mike Lee's STARFIRE is #6 in Science Fiction, Military, US Kindle Sales

Breakwater Harbor Books would like to send a HUGE continued congratulations to author Mike Lee for climbing Amazon's Kindle charts to be ranked #6 in Science Fiction, Military! StarFire has been topping Amazon sales charts for weeks now and it is exciting to see his continued climb!

This is Mike's first release since joining BHB and it is phenomenal to see StarFire and his other books, Fey and Horker's Law, doing so well! He is an excellent author. If you haven't yet checked him out, BHB highly suggests the read. You will be glad you did!

An action-packed Science Fiction novel,

Captain Vince Lombard, G-Marine company commander, is tasked with tracking down a stray ship. The Alliance Military Ship StarFire has gone silent, and previous attempts to locate her have resulted in the loss of more ships. After two previous wars with xenospecies humanity bumped into while expanding into space, no one knows what might be the cause of StarFire's missing in action status. And  internal politics between Fleet command and the Galactic Marine Corps might mean  that, unless something is done, humanity may get the news it's at war with yet  another new race about the time they show up to attack one of the human systems  in the sector.

A prequel to the book "Fey," this story is a novelization  of the story Vince related to Blondie in the previous book, which many readers  requested.

What others are
saying about StarFire

"Mike Lee has written yet another solid fast-reading book that grabs your attention and keeps it engaged until the satisfying conclusion. I will be reading this one again and can't wait for the next Mike Lee book."

—  Amazon review by 'Far Left Texas'

"Starfire is a truly superb book, one of the few of the hundreds I've read this year that stands out by itself. Beautifully crafted, very good cadence, great reflection by the main hero, who does not always occupy center stage. Lots of mystery left to ponder, this author does not insult the intelligence of the reader but compliments it - and that is rare. The characters are well developed according to their roles and aren't just mirrors for the main character. The plot is plausible and not drowned in technology while being quite comfortable with it."

Scott J. Toney, FREE FANTASY BOOK PROMO

This weekend, 12/8 and 12/9, Scott J. Toney's Kindle editions of The Ark of Humanity and Eden Legacy will be FREE to download through Amazon.com

Scott is excited to offer these works as Mike Lee's new release, StarFire, hits the #10 spot on Amazon Kindle for Science Fiction, Space Opera.

The Ark of Humanity -
God flooded the earth to annihilate humanity's sins. What if that sinful race didn't die when floodwaters covered them but instead adapted to breathe water?

Praise for The Ark of Humanity - "I can see comparisons to Philip Pullman's 'His Dark Materials' trilogy in some of the themes raised [in The Ark of Humanity]. As with Pullman's 'daemons', the relationship between the beings and their companions who transport them is particularly enjoyable, a relationship which also reminded me of the dragons in the film 'Avatar'. I can see this as a fantastic storyboard for a Pixar film." - HarperCollins

Eden Legacy - Thomas, the young King of Havilah, is drawn to a forest beyond his lands. Here he discovers seven figs, fruit from the long forgotten Eden.

In the land of Cush, Princess Lilya suffers under the rule of her father, until the day when young King Thomas of Havilah invites her away to his lands. There, she hopes to find peace she has never known.

But Thomas has been drawn to a foreign land, to figs he hopes are from Eden and the Tree of Life. When he eats them to heal his wounds things change within him, distorting him in ways he could not predict.

Now Lilya must make a decision. Does she stand by Thomas' side or act to dispel the evil consuming his soul?

Amidst this world Lilya has befriended a dragon. There are secrets within the beast that could determine all their fates.
